... is it strange to sometimes wish you could go home? Even if there's nothing there for you? [ nothing except death, in her case. this isn't hilariously morbid or anything, no. ]

I'm just not sure when or how things got so ... complicated. Is this just what life is like...?

[ Xion is outside today, somewhere a little more quiet. She's sitting on the railing of the bridge that passes over the river between houses 14 and 35, swinging her legs gently as she holds onto the rail with one hand and the journal with her other. It ... doesn't seem terribly safe, but then again, she's used to much higher places. Feel free to startle her from her contemplation. She could use it. ]

Maybe they will. It's hard to say. A lot can change over a short period of time.

[He shrugs.]

[ but she's not thinking about that in a positive way. she's thinking about how Riku did change everything between them, with just a few words. she takes a deep breath, then finally sits up straight, looking at him with a serious expression. ]

Riku... I'm always going to care about you. But right now, I think I just need ... to start over again. I don't know how to stop feeling this way yet, so ... maybe with a little time, if we start from the beginning... I can fix it.

[He nods. Really, that was what he was referring to, anyway.]

That's fine. Take all the time you need. I know I messed up, and it's not going to be an easy fix.

Still, when you say start over, what do you mean, exactly?

[ ... slowly; this hurts to say ]

Do you think for now, we could ... just be friends? While I figure things out?

[That does hurt a little, but it's better than the alternative of her still avoiding him. After a while, he nods.]

Yeah, that's fine. It's more than I expected, anyway.

[ goddamnit, this hurts, why is she even doing this--

before she can succumb to temptation and just lean against him again or do something exceptionally stupid like kiss him, Xion hops down from the railing and looks up at him, forcing a smile that's braver than she feels. ]

Yeah. I guess you're right.

[He'll...force a smile, too. Though, hm...]

By the way, about that sword you mentioned...

[ visibly taken aback. and a little cautious, her brows drawing together. she didn't think he'd remember she said that. ]

That's the same... from when you beat me. [ a hand goes over her mouth. ] You called my Keyblade a sham. You even said it was worthless. I got really angry and ran at you and you took me down without even trying...

[ perhaps bafflingly, she's smiling. beaming, actually. she's ... kind of proud of him. ]

You really have it! You're strong now.

[Heh. It's... kind of weird seeing her happy after what she said, but he appreciates it either way. Dismissing the Soul Eater, he slides down, leaning against the edge of the bridge again.]

Yeah, I am. It just took a while to get there.

... when I first met you, you were always quiet. You never really said much, but when you did talk, you always told the truth ... even if it hurt. You helped me more than anyone else could back then.

But you were so sad, too. [ hesitates a little, smiling sadly and looking down at her feet. that was her fault. ] ... it's strange, seeing you with that sword, but ... being so different, somehow. When I met you, you wore our cloak and you always had a blindfold on. You'd never take it off, not for anything. You were taller and your hair was longer. [ she looks up at him again, thoughtfully. ] ... I guess a lot of time must pass between when you find that sword and when I meet you.

It's possible. The way I got this sword isn't something I'm proud of, anyway.

[He sighs, looking down towards the river.]

The one who gave it to me's the same witch who turned me against Sora; she's part of the reason I gave into the darkness.

... [ she moves to stand next to him, a hand coming up to rest on the railing. ]

You talk about the darkness like it's a bad thing.

Nah.

[He shakes his head.]

It's not the darkness that's bad, just what's lurking inside it. I gave in because my heart was weak, but that's my fault in the first place.

[ she merely looks at him, not refuting his statement about the weakness of his heart. ]

Is it strong now?

I can't say for sure. Maybe it still is weak; I can't just expect things to change right away.

[He raises one hand and clenches it into a fist.]

But I've accepted my darkness, and I'll do whatever it takes to make up for my mistakes.

... that's good. I'm glad, Riku. [ tiny smile. ]

What made you come out this way, anyway?

[And another shrug.]

I just needed some space, I guess. I've got a lot to think about right now, and I might as well get used to being here again.

I know what you mean. That's why I came out here. [ she leans against the railing now, arms folded over it. ] Just to think and watch the water.

[ glancing at him, a little curiously ] So you remember everything about when you were here before?

That's right. The past year... it's all there.

[It's... both complicated things and made them easier at the same time.]

... I guess that's both good and bad, huh. [ tiny, sympathetic smile. ]

Not gonna lie, there are some things I wish I could forget, but at the same time, I know that's impossible.

Better to remember it all and not make any of those mistakes again.

[ just blinks at him, expression for once not managing to give away her thoughts. though really, she's wondering what it is he'd want to forget.

but what he says next, at least, makes the corner of her mouth quirk up again. ] Luceti's taught us both a lot, I think.
