[ Axel's not the only one who hasn't been in a certain apartment that much, lately. Xion's been scarce, keeping to herself as much as humanly possible except through journal communication. But right now, despite the cold, she's sitting on a bench in the center of town. At least she's got a puffy white coat on to keep her warm.

She's writing in her journal, at the moment. Doing ... math! Very simple math, just some addition, and murmuring aloud to herself as she does it. 363... 364... 365...

After a sudden pause, she crosses all of her work out, then sets her pen down, staring up at the sky. Despite her quiet voice, the journal picks up what she says anyway. ]

I turn a year old today...

[ Then she shuts the journal, so no one who isn't actually nearby right now will hear this part -- or see her expression turn suddenly sad. ]

[Luka blinks, one year old? Well, that's a bit older than her.] Happy birthday, miss, how does it feel?

[ oh god what, a voice. the journal recorded that? Xion opens it back up, blinking ... then sighs. oh well. ... wait, what-- ]

"Birthday?"

[ nah, you're good dude. ]

You're one year old now, right? So it's your birthday, don't you have those in your world? [She can't imagine a world without birthdays but maybe they use a different term?]

... well, no. I don't think I've ever heard that word before, but ... it sounds familiar, somehow. This is confusing.

Oh? Well, in my world when a person arrives to the world for the first time it's called birth. Thus the day in which they were born becomes their Birth-day. It's how people there count their years of existence. If you have been existing for one year that means today is your birthday.

...One year?

[she has to have misheard that]

Oi oi oi! Are you a clone?!

Oh ... well, that makes sense, at least. But why "happy" birthday? It it something you're supposed to celebrate?

[oh. well, there are a lot of weird people here, but... how to inquire without sounding stupid.]

...You look a lot older.

[ WHAT. Xion drops her journal in shock, then quickly picks it up and locks the conversation. ]

H-How did you know?!

Well, existence is important by itself, so yeah the birthday is something to celebrate. It signals the day you came to exist in the world, it's special because of that. Every day many people are born and thus everyday is someone's birthday but still... You only have one and without it the world wouldn't have you, that's why it's special.

I know... it's hard to explain. I'm supposed to be around fourteen or fifteen, but I haven't actually been alive that long.

[AHHAHAHA! He knew it!]

How else is someone who looks like that only a year old?

[That's... yeah. She decides to just let it go.]

Well, happy birthday, then... or... coming-into-being day.

[ there's a long pause after that explanation. she sounds kind of dispirited when she pipes up again. ]

Oh. I ... I guess so.

[ very sheepishly, without a whole lot of conviction ]

Um, thanks. It's really weird, though. I'd never even heard of birthdays before this.

I don't know! Just ... please don't tell anyone else. I'd ... I'd rather not have everyone know.

Do you come from a world where there are other clones or something? I really wouldn't have expected someone to just guess that.

Seriously? [she's imagining you came from some kind of... weird cloneworld now] Well, I guess if you've never had one before that makes sense.

[A small pause.] I'm sorry, did I say something bad?

[ that wouldn't be far off! ] Yeah, but no one else I knew back home ever celebrated one either. Maybe they just didn't like celebrating... What do people normally do on birthdays?

There's no clones on Earth - well clone people - but it's obvious that if someone is less than a year old and like this they're a time-traveler, clone, alien, or some non-human-species which grows at a hyper-excellerated rate.

Well... it depends. Usually there's cake and people give you presents.

No, not at all. I guess it just seems strange to celebrate something like that...

[ pushes past it, trying to smile a little ] Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud. It's no big deal. It feels really weird to have a birthday, though! My first one ever.
