[ Axel's not the only one who hasn't been in a certain apartment that much, lately. Xion's been scarce, keeping to herself as much as humanly possible except through journal communication. But right now, despite the cold, she's sitting on a bench in the center of town. At least she's got a puffy white coat on to keep her warm.

She's writing in her journal, at the moment. Doing ... math! Very simple math, just some addition, and murmuring aloud to herself as she does it. 363... 364... 365...

After a sudden pause, she crosses all of her work out, then sets her pen down, staring up at the sky. Despite her quiet voice, the journal picks up what she says anyway. ]

I turn a year old today...

[ Then she shuts the journal, so no one who isn't actually nearby right now will hear this part -- or see her expression turn suddenly sad. ]

[oh. well, there are a lot of weird people here, but... how to inquire without sounding stupid.]

...You look a lot older.

I know... it's hard to explain. I'm supposed to be around fourteen or fifteen, but I haven't actually been alive that long.

[That's... yeah. She decides to just let it go.]

Well, happy birthday, then... or... coming-into-being day.

[ very sheepishly, without a whole lot of conviction ]

Um, thanks. It's really weird, though. I'd never even heard of birthdays before this.

Seriously? [she's imagining you came from some kind of... weird cloneworld now] Well, I guess if you've never had one before that makes sense.

[ that wouldn't be far off! ] Yeah, but no one else I knew back home ever celebrated one either. Maybe they just didn't like celebrating... What do people normally do on birthdays?

Well... it depends. Usually there's cake and people give you presents.

Oh wow... that sounds like fun, actually. I wish I could have done that... but there's always next year, I guess.

You could still have a party now... or at least cake. People usually jump at a chance to do something around here.

... maybe. That sounds like something you'd do with your friends, and ... I don't think that would work so well, right now.

[A little bit more somber than she was.] Not here, huh?

No, they're here, it's just ... one of them was just kidnapped by the Malnosso, and I'm really worried about him, and ... my other two friends ... [ she gives a sudden, weak, utterly humorless laugh ] Things just haven't been going that well lately.

[There's a pause. Kidnapped...]

Hey, where are you right now?

The center of the village... near the clothes shop and those other stores. Why?

Stick around there for a bit. [And there's some shifting sounds, like she's getting up to go somewhere.]

[ s-startled. she's not coming, is she? ]

Um, okay.

[Indeed she is. It won't be for another 8 minutes or so but she enters the square wearing a bright pink jacket, miniskirt, boots and leggings. Now to look around for... the girl whose name she'd never gotten. Whoops.]

[ ... well, it's kind of hard to miss that jacket. A little uncertain, Xion stands from her bench, hugging her journal to her chest. ]

[That looks like the right face. Yuzu approaches.]

Hey. You're... who I was just talking with, right? I'm Yuzu.

[ she's still surprised Yuzu came at all, so forgive her if she's a little hesitant. she does smile, though. ]

I'm -- Xion. Why did you come all the way out here, though...?

Because we're going to get a cake.

W-We are?

[ shocked. ]

But you barely even know me! [ not that she's not grateful! she's just ... genuinely floored. ]

It's your first birthday, you have to celebrate somehow.

[a little softer tone] Besides, a friend of mine was kidnapped recently too. [And she may or may not have been feeling bored and lonely and restless.]

[ she's silent for a moment, just ... really stunned, then suddenly breaks out in this sad, very grateful smile ]

Then maybe we can cheer each other up. Where to?
