[ Axel's not the only one who hasn't been in a certain apartment that much, lately. Xion's been scarce, keeping to herself as much as humanly possible except through journal communication. But right now, despite the cold, she's sitting on a bench in the center of town. At least she's got a puffy white coat on to keep her warm.

She's writing in her journal, at the moment. Doing ... math! Very simple math, just some addition, and murmuring aloud to herself as she does it. 363... 364... 365...

After a sudden pause, she crosses all of her work out, then sets her pen down, staring up at the sky. Despite her quiet voice, the journal picks up what she says anyway. ]

I turn a year old today...

[ Then she shuts the journal, so no one who isn't actually nearby right now will hear this part -- or see her expression turn suddenly sad. ]

... well, no. I don't think I've ever heard that word before, but ... it sounds familiar, somehow. This is confusing.

Oh? Well, in my world when a person arrives to the world for the first time it's called birth. Thus the day in which they were born becomes their Birth-day. It's how people there count their years of existence. If you have been existing for one year that means today is your birthday.

Oh ... well, that makes sense, at least. But why "happy" birthday? It it something you're supposed to celebrate?

Well, existence is important by itself, so yeah the birthday is something to celebrate. It signals the day you came to exist in the world, it's special because of that. Every day many people are born and thus everyday is someone's birthday but still... You only have one and without it the world wouldn't have you, that's why it's special.

[ there's a long pause after that explanation. she sounds kind of dispirited when she pipes up again. ]

Oh. I ... I guess so.

[A small pause.] I'm sorry, did I say something bad?

No, not at all. I guess it just seems strange to celebrate something like that...

[ pushes past it, trying to smile a little ] Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud. It's no big deal. It feels really weird to have a birthday, though! My first one ever.

Hmm, I suppose I can relate to that. I don't find it strange because everyone does it in my world, though maybe it's strange for me to celebrate it. [More than a birthday she would have a creatinday? Anyway that would be more for her creators, right?] How does it feel to be finally one year old? I still have some time before I know.

... you-- you mean you're not a year old yet? No way! I never thought I'd meet someone else like me. [ she sounds considerably more cheerful now, at least ] Um -- I guess it feels nice, but I wouldn't have thought of it as important unless you told me about birthdays. But-- um-- [ she's dying to know how Luka's so young but looks so old, but doesn't know how to ask, oh man. ]

No, I'm just nine months old. [The smile can be noticed in her voice.] There aren't many like us in my world either, at least yet but more and more are being created. [Small pause.] Maybe it's silly but I cant wait for being one year old, it actually feels important to be able to say how long I have existed in years rather than months... Are you going to celebrate it now that you know it's your birthday?

[ that surprises her, but only a tiny bit. ] Created? Um, what for? [ she pauses, making a thoughtful noise, but her voice stays warm. ] You know, now that you put it that way, I can see what you mean. It's pretty important for people like us to hit a year old, huh? And, well ... [ a little hesitant, suddenly ] ... maybe. I don't know if it's a very good day for that sort of thing.

I was created to sing! To sing whatever people asked me to and the songs they gave me. [Pauses.] Why wouldn't it be a good day to celebrate? It's the day you have the most important reason to celebrate, isn't it? What's bigger than your existence?

Wow ... you must be really good at it, then! --Um, well ... [ there's a biiiit of a pause. her voice is a bit quieter again whens she picks back up. ] My friends... one of them was kidnapped by the Malnosso today and two of them are sort of fighting and-- [ well that came out in a bit of a rush. ] ... I think it'd be better to wait.

Well, it's the reason of my existence, if I wasn't good it would be a shame. [Silence as she hears that.] Oh, I see, yeah maybe it's not the best moment for it, I'm sorry the Malnosso and that fight ruined it. But still it should be a happy day for you, even if just a bit, specially if things are bad.

... can I hear you sing, sometime? If you don't mind, that is.

And it's okay. Really. I wouldn't know what to do anyway, and, well ... I'd rather make sure my friends are okay first. They're really important to me. So if I have to wait a while ... I don't mind.

Of course you can! What kind of song would you like to hear? I could sing for you now if you want.

Ah, that's so sweet. You're really nice, your friends must be glad for having you. What's your name miss? I'm Luka.

Well ... do yo have a favorite song? That would work.

[ p-pause. and a tiny, sheepish laugh. ] I don't know about that... I just try to do the best I can. And it's Xion. Nice to meet you, Luka.

Everyone always tries to do the best they can to be good friends, but people can still easily forget about others in favor of themselves. You, however, don't seem to be that kind of person, even if you just realized it was your birthday and learnt about it, you still worry about your friends. Not everyone would do that, you know. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Xion.

[ a tiny gasp, and then she laughs a little more ] I like it!

"In favor of themselves" ... I guess so. But you seem like a nice person too, Luka.

[ dnw to talk about this. something else, then! ] Don't stop singing, though! It sounds so pretty.

I'm flattered, Miss Xion. However it's hard to say if I'm really nice or not, a lot of my personality was settled when I was created, though I learn and develop on my own I can't really know if me being nice is part of "me" or part of what my creators wanted me to be.

I will be happy to sing for you as much as you want. Anything in special or should I chose again?

[ paaaause ] I think ... that if you want to be nice to people, then it's got to be part of you. And even if you were made that way, it doesn't make you any less kind.
